WASHINGTON
(AA) - US President Joe Biden nominated Julie Su on Wednesday to serve as Secretary of Labor, replacing Marty Walsh.
Biden thanked Walsh for “everything” he has done and for “for standing up for labor” and “ordinary people.”
Biden noted that Su was a civil rights attorney for 17 years and spent two years as Deputy Secretary of Labor representing workers and praised her efforts to protect workers.
“Julie is the American dream,” said Biden, noting that she is a daughter of Chinese immigrants.
“Her mom was a union worker and her dad was a small business owner. She went to law school,” he said.
Su, a graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School, speaks Mandarin and Spanish and she has two daughters.
Su must be approved by the Senate.
