China has summoned the United States ambassador to Beijing after it claimed that a U.S. warship had sailed near the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, which China says is its territory.
The People's Daily reported early Wednesday that Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui summoned Ambassador Max Baucus to express "strong discontent" over the U.S.S. Lassen's apparent patrolling within the islands' territorial waters.
The Daily added that China's Ministry of Defense had sent two destroyers "to warn the trespassing U.S. warship", which it said had entered the area near Subi Reef without its knowledge.
