NEW YORK
A student at a Texas high school fatally shot herself after shooting and injuring another female student, local officials said.
Brewster County Sheriff Ronny Dodson told reporters the 14-year-old freshman, who is not named because she is a minor, shot the girl at approximately 8 a.m. local time (1400GMT) outside a restroom at the western Texas Alpine High School music hall.
The shooter, who moved to Alpine with her family six months ago, then shot herself and died of self-inflicted wounds, Dodson said.
The victim has been hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, the sheriff said.
Dodson added that the motive was not clear and no other suspects were being sought in an ongoing investigation.
A federal law enforcement officer was also accidentally shot by a marshal responding to the situation and is reported to be in stable condition.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton released a statement offering sympathy for members of the community impacted by "this senseless act of violence".
Since 2013, there have been at least 193 school shootings in the U.S. -- an average of nearly one per week, gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety reports.
