The US State Department will issue a limited number of specially designed passports to mark the country’s 250th anniversary this year, a spokesperson confirmed to Anadolu on Tuesday, as reports say the redesign could feature an image of President Donald Trump.
“As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed U.S. Passports to commemorate this historic occasion,” Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in an emailed statement to Anadolu, referring to July 4 Independence Day, the day in 1776 that the Declaration of Independence was signed.
“These passports will feature customized artwork and enhanced imagery while maintaining the same security features that make the U.S. Passport the most secure documents in the world,” he added.
The Bulwark website reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter, that the proposed redesign could involve a limited run of 25,000 passports featuring Trump’s portrait on the inside cover.
According to the report, the design under consideration features Trump’s second inaugural portrait superimposed over the Declaration of Independence, along with his signature, with a more traditional patriotic image planned for the back cover.
A State Department official told Anadolu that there will be no additional fee for the commemorative passports.
