TEHERAN
Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, a conservative candidate and a former parliament speaker, on Monday withdrew his candidacy from Iran's June 14 presidential elections.
Haddad-Adel said that he dropped out of the presidential race in favor of other conservative candidates running for the top post.
"I withdrew my candidacy to help avoid the defeat of the conservative wing at the presidential elections," he explained.
Haddad-Adel noted that the other candidates had to show necessary sensitivity to make sure that the conservatives win in the first round of the voting, or the last two runner-ups be both conservatives if the elections goes for a second round.
