After losing the first set to her Chinese opponent 2-6, Williams then leveled the game winning the second set 6-3. Williams then won the final set 6-0 and reached the championship for the fourth time.
Williams also won an award of 2 million 145 thousand USD.
WTA Championships ended with the singles final match on Sunday.
Shuai/Su-Wei win WTA championship in doubles
The couple of Peng Shuai (China) and Hsieh Su-Wei (Taiwan) has won the championship in doubles after beating the other finalist couple, Russian Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships Istanbul Sunday.
Shuai/Se-Wei won the game with sets ending 6-4 and 7-5 to reach the championship, becoming the first Asian couple winning this tournament.
New spectators record for WTA venue in Istanbul
As more than 16 thousand spectators rushed into Istanbul’s Sinan Erdem Sports Arena, a new record in the number of tennis lovers who arrived at the venue to watch their most favorite sport has been broken Sunday.
Exactly 16,457 spectators watched the final clash between Serena Williams (US) and Li Na (China) for the top place in singles of TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships Istanbul. This number has been registered as the highest number of spectators watching a game at the venue.
Serena Williams won the championship at the WTA Championship for the fourth time.
Williams said after the game that she was very happy with the championship but sorry because the tournament is leaving Istanbul next year as everybody was so excited to have been in this city.
Li Na for her part said that she did her best in the game but she ran out of energy in the end.
The tournament will be organized in Singapore between 2014 and 2018.
