At least nine people were killed Wednesday evening in an attack by unidentified armed assailants on a mining project site in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province, local officials said.
The attack targeted a copper and gold project site in the Chagai district, Dawn reported Thursday, citing a statement from National Resources Limited.
The company said security forces, including the Frontier Corps, responded quickly, secured the area and launched a clearance operation.
While the company did not initially report casualties, local authorities later confirmed that nine people were killed.
“At least nine employees, including two security guards, were killed,” a senior Chagai administration official said on condition of anonymity.
Police officials also confirmed the attack and the death toll.
The company said it is closely coordinating with relevant authorities and emphasized that the safety and security of its employees and operations remain its highest priority.
