An Australian Army soldier was killed and five others were injured during a military training exercise in the country’s Northern Territory, authorities said Tuesday.
The incident occurred Monday at the Mount Bundey Training Area, southeast of Darwin, according to a statement from Australia’s Defence Department.
The department did not disclose the circumstances surrounding the incident or the condition of the injured soldiers.
Australian broadcaster ABC reported that the soldier killed in the vehicle rollover at the military training area was identified as Cpl. Brendan Hannam.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese offered condolences to the soldier’s family, friends and colleagues and wished the five injured personnel a speedy recovery.
“There are no safe or easy days for those who serve in our country’s name,” Albanese said in a statement published on the Australian prime minister’s official website.
Albanese said the incident was a reminder of the risks borne by military personnel and their families.
Local media reported that the incident involved a military vehicle accident. Emergency services were alerted Monday afternoon, and the injured personnel were transported to Royal Darwin Hospital.
The Mount Bundey facility, located around 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of Darwin, is used by the Australian Army and allied forces for live-fire training.
An Australian soldier was also killed at the facility during a live-fire exercise in 2017.
