UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday condemned the latest launch of a ballistic missile by North Korea in violation of Security Council resolutions.
"The launch undermines regional security and stability and efforts to create space for dialogue," according to an email Guterres' office sent to Anadolu Agency.
"The Secretary-General calls on the Government of the DPRK to fully comply with its international obligations and work towards reopening communication channels," it added, referring to North Korea by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The isolated autocratic country on Monday fired a ballistic missile over Japan for the first time in two decades, exasperating its neighbors and the United States.
The projectile flew around 2,700 kilometers (1,678 miles) and "passed through the sky over Japan", according to a statement from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Security Council urges Pyongyang to stop “all outrageous acts”
The UN Security Council on Tuesday condemned North Korea for its ballistic missile test over Japan.
Following a closed-door emergency meeting, the council’s 15 members unanimously adopted a statement demanding Pyongyang immediately halt “all outrageous acts.”
The country is “deliberately undermining regional peace and stability and has caused grave security concerns around the world,” it stressed, alluding to the North’s most recent test of a ballistic missile that flew over Japan and into the East Sea.
The statement also demanded that North Korea stop all nuclear programs and related activities.
