CANAKKALE, Turkey
The husband of Queen Elisabeth II, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, sent a thank you letter to a Turkish doctor of science and history for a research project that resulted in the publication of ‘Reflections of the Deep’, a book on the Battle of Canakkale.
Dr. Mithat Atabay at the Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University in Turkey told Anadolu Agency that his long-term book project was finalized with the help and support from Vehbi Koc and Ayhan Sahenk Foundation.
The project helped identify how and when 33 ships sank in the Battle of Canakkale, also known as the Gallipoli Campaign, in which thousands of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, or Anzac, soldiers died during the battles.
Atabay said it took two years to achieve study results from which the book entitled ‘Reflections of the Deep’ was written in Turkish and English. This work was also sent to Prince Philip, who sent a thank you letter in return.
The letter said that the "book provided an important and comprehensive study of the Battle of Canakkale."
