Turkish modular building manufacturer Karmod has produced custom container buildings for the UN climate conference COP31, which will be held in Antalya, Türkiye, in November, the company said in a statement on Friday.
The specially designed structures, built using a hybrid construction system, will serve as rest areas for participants attending the COP31 summit in the Mediterranean resort city.
Karmod Container General Manager Ensar Cankaya said the buildings were designed in line with the summit’s sustainability goals, using environmentally friendly production methods and a zero-waste approach.
Cankaya said container structures, traditionally associated with construction-site facilities, are increasingly being used for purposes ranging from housing to offices.
“Container buildings are still widely known as a construction model used mainly for site mobilization,” he said.
“Today, however, they are preferred in many areas, from housing to offices. Their structural safety, compatibility with modern architectural designs and environmentally friendly production model make them a suitable building alternative for the resilient cities and buildings agenda.”
Cankaya said the units produced for COP31 feature a hybrid design developed specifically for the event.
He said Karmod reinforced the wall panels with steel frames beyond its standard specifications to improve the buildings’ structural performance.
“The buildings have been upgraded to the highest level in terms of insulation. On-site installation of the seven blocks is nearly complete, with each block covering 300 square meters. The container buildings, which will serve as lounges for international participants during the summit, include amenities such as accessible restrooms. All of the buildings were produced as demountable structures and will be reused at different locations after the summit,” Cankaya said.
