Germans do not expect the war involving the US and Israel against Iran to end soon, despite ongoing negotiations, according to a survey published Friday by public broadcaster ZDF.
The poll found 87% of respondents expect the conflict to continue for an extended period, while only 9% believe it will end in the coming weeks.
It also showed that 93% of Germans oppose any military involvement by their country in the war.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently said Berlin is ready to contribute militarily to securing the Strait of Hormuz following a ceasefire between the US and Iran.
Speaking alongside Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Berlin, Merz reiterated support for diplomatic efforts, stressing that “there will be no lasting peace in the region without a diplomatic solution.”
He also said Iran’s nuclear program must be stopped, adding that Tehran must not acquire a nuclear weapon.
