Poland to install electronic security system along Ukrainian border

Poland's Border Guard has announced plans to install an electronic security system covering more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) of its border with Ukraine, broadcaster TVP World reported Thursday.

Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Border Guard Violeta Gorzkowska told a parliamentary committee Wednesday that the system will include surveillance and motion-detection technology, which will complement existing physical barriers.

The equipment will reportedly be funded by the EU.

Gorzkowska noted that a total of 112 kilometers (70 miles) of the border will be covered by the new electronic system.

Polish authorities also plan to strengthen border protection along the country's frontiers with Belarus and Russia, including additional watchtowers equipped with surveillance and drone-detection technology.

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski also addressed the perceived Russian threat Thursday.

“For a long time, Europe refused to acknowledge this reality, but we Poles, shaped by our historical experience, know that we must prepare," he told TVP World.
