Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Thursday that intelligence information suggests Russia could target Poland and other NATO members supporting Ukraine with drones or missiles while seeking to portray the incidents as "accidental," Polish broadcaster TVP World reported.
Tusk outlined the assessment during an address to parliament, warning that Moscow could seek to put NATO's collective defense commitment to the test.
"According to intelligence assessments, Russia's plan ... includes hybrid drone and missile strikes against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland," he said. "These possibilities have been discussed for some time, but the information is now highly consistent and, unfortunately, convincing.”
Although Tusk did not identify the intelligence services behind the assessment, he said last week that he received a detailed report from CIA Director John Ratcliffe.
"In short, there is a real risk that drones or other types of missiles could enter the territory of one or several countries on the eastern flank and even cause damage, while the official narrative would be that it was an accident," he said.
His warning came as Polish fighter jets were deployed Thursday during Russian strikes on western Ukraine near Poland.
The Polish military said the nation’s airspace was not breached.
