An Israeli court has sentenced a young Palestinian man to 11 years behind bars for allegedly planning to assassinate the Israeli prime minister and other officials, according to accounts in the Israeli press.
Jamal Rashda, who holds Israeli citizenship, was convicted earlier of “conspiracy to commit murder”, “aiding the enemy in a time of war” and “espionage”, Israeli daily Israel Hayom reported Thursday.
According to the newspaper, Rashda was convicted for allegedly planning an attack on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior Israeli officials, including former Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat.
The newspaper went on to allege that Rashda had “reported to terrorists in Syria” and had been “planning attacks on buildings affiliated with the American consulate” in Jerusalem.
