Kuwait condemns new Iranian attacks as violation of sovereignty

Kuwait on Thursday condemned new Iranian missile and drone attacks, calling them a "flagrant violation" of the Gulf country's sovereignty and a threat to its security and stability.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the attacks targeted several sites in Kuwait, including a residential complex.

The ministry said the continued attacks constituted a serious violation of international law, the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 2817.

It warned that the escalation threatened regional security and stability and undermined diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation.

Kuwait reaffirmed its right to take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty, security and interests and protect citizens and residents in accordance with international law.

The latest attacks came a day after Iran launched its first round of strikes on Kuwait amid renewed fighting with the US.

Earlier Thursday, the Kuwaiti military said its air defenses were responding to Iranian missile and drone threats, adding that explosions heard in the country resulted from interceptions of "hostile targets."

Iranian media claimed US military facilities in Kuwait were targeted, while Tehran has maintained that its attacks are directed at the US military presence in the country rather than Kuwait.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Wednesday that it targeted the headquarters and accommodation of the US commander at Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait.

The attacks came amid renewed Iran-US fighting after a US strike on Iran's Larak Island ended a roughly month-long lull in direct hostilities.
