Mauritania's Union for the Republic (UFR) party, led by President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, came in first in Saturday’s parliamentary polls, according to unofficial results on Sunday.
According to Mauritanian state television, the opposition National Rally for Reform and Development Party received votes mostly from the capital Nouakchott and the southern Hodh el-Gharbi city,
There were around 1.4 million eligible voters in Mauritania's parliamentary and municipal polls, which were held in the absence of international observers.
On Saturday, some 98 Mauritanian political parties were vying for seats on the country’s 146-member legislative assembly and on numerous municipal councils.
Opposition figures have questioned the integrity of the electoral process.
