KARBALA, Iraq
One person was killed on Friday in a suicide bombing that struck Iraq’s southern city of Karbala, an army officer said.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Lieutenant-Colonel Safaa Kamel said security forces had intercepted the bomber as he had tried to enter the city’s main bus terminal in Friday’s early hours.
When confronted by security personnel, the bomber detonated an explosive-laden vest, killing one person and injuring six others.
Iraq has suffered a devastating security vacuum since mid-2014, when the Daesh terrorist group captured the northern city of Mosul -- currently the target of a large army offensive -- along with large swathes of territory in northern and western Iraq.
