SANAA, Yemen
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula announced Tuesday the death of its leader Nasser al-Wuhayshi in a U.S. airstrike in Yemen.
A video published by the group on Twitter showed Khaled Batarfi, a senior member of AQAP, who said that Sheik Abu Huraira (Qassim al-Rimi) was chosen to succeed al-Wuhayshi.
The video could not be independently verified.
Al-Wuhayshi was one of the most wanted al-Qaeda leaders in the Arabian Peninsula and was the secretary of Osama bin Laden.
The Yemeni government had said in May that al-Qaeda remains active in several parts of the country's south, from which it stages sporadic attacks on security personnel and Houthi militants.
