The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) opened an election observation mission Friday for Ukraine’s parliamentary elections scheduled for October 24.
According to a statement from the OSCE, the organization of the mission accepted an invitation from the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights opened an observation office in Ukraine’s capital Kiev, where 6 experts will be based in the capital, 80 long-term observers will be deployed across the country and 600 short-term observers will observe the elections.
Observers will monitor if the elections follow OSCE regulations and other international standards found in democratic elections.
"In the course of observation, the mission will meet with representatives of relevant authorities and of political parties, as well as with candidates, and with representatives of the judiciary, civil society, the media and the international community," the statement said.
On the day of the election, they will monitor the opening of the polls and observe voting, the counting of votes, and the tabulation of results.
A day after the elections, the OSCE is to issue a statement of their initial findings and conclusions, and approximately two months later the mission will release a final report of the electoral process.
