Serbia's and Kosovo's leaders reached an agreement to normalize relations between their countries in Friday's European Union-brokered talks in a significant step forward in the EU membership bids of both nations.
"What we are seeing is a step away from the past and for both of them a step closer to Europe," EU's top foreign policy official Catherine Ashton said, congratulating Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci and his Serbian counterpart Ivica Dacic for their "determination and courage."
The EU is expected to give a firm date to Serbia to start membership negotiations and to sign an association and partnership agreement with Kosovo.
