The British government is considering handing life sentences to persons involved in terrorism training.
British newspaper the Daily Telegraph disclosed that ministers were drawing up tough new plans to deal with people who train in terrorist techniques.
Currently anyone found to have had terrorist training can face up to 14 years, but that could be increased to a life sentence for anyone jailed for weapons training linked to terrorism, including the making and possession of explosives.
Unless deemed them fit for release by a panel of experts, the imprisoned would have to serve their full prison terms. Ministers are also looking at the two-strike rule where serious offenders would face an automatic life term for a second serious offence.
A Whitehall source told the Daily Telegraph that "People want to know that those who commit, or try to commit, terrorist offences face the toughest punishments."
"Even when they're out, we'll still be keeping an eye on them and they can go straight back to prison if they break their life licence," the source added.
A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said in a statement to Anadolu Agency that "Those who endanger lives and threaten our national security deserve to receive long sentences. We are looking at options to further ensure that those convicted of the most serious terror offences are given the toughest sentences possible, plans will follow in due course."
