WASHINGTON
US State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki reiterated the US position whether a military coup occurred in Egypt in order to continue US aid, emphasizing the move was consistent with the US national security interests.
"We believe that the continued provision of assistance to Egypt, consistent with our law, is important to our goal of advancing a responsible transition to democratic governance, and is consistent with our national security interests", Psaki told a daily briefing on Friday.
"The law does not require us to make a formal determination – that is a review that we have undergone – as to whether a coup took place, and it is not in our national interest to make such a determination."
Psaki said they will work with Congress to determine how best to continue assistance to Egypt "in a manner that encourages Egypt’s interim government to quickly and responsibly transition back to a stable, democratic, civilian-led, and inclusive government."
On July 3, Egypt's powerful military ousted the country's first democratically elected President Mohammed Morsi. The army announced a "roadmap" that suspended the constitution and named head of the country's top court, Adly Mansour, as the interim president.
