A Yemeni court on Wednesday sentenced 16 people, including one lawmaker, to death over the 2009 murder of a local official, a judicial source said.
"The Taizz court sentenced 16 people to death, including MP Ahmad al-Barati from the General People's Congress, for the 2009 murder of Ahmed Mansour al-Shawafi, the director-general of the Al-Khidair district," the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Anadolu Agency.
"The court also acquitted four others," he added.
The verdict is still subject to appeal.
Al-Shawafi and two companions were shot dead by armed men believed to have been acting at the behest of al-Barati, who had allegedly opposed al-Shawafi's appointment as director-general of Al-Khidair.
