ANKARA
Canada reached the quarter-finals of the women’s basketball world championship Wednesday, beating the Czech Republic 91-71 in Ankara.
The game in Ankara Arena started close and at the 5.19 mark in the first quarter Canada led by four points.
Canadian forward Katherine Plouffe scored five quick points for Canada to finish the first quarter ahead 22-13.
The Canadians continued to find their way through the Czech defense, scoring another 22 points in the second quarter to finish the half ahead by a comfortable 12 points.
The Czech team managed to narrow Canada's lead to ten by the end of the third quarter, thanks to Eva Viteckova's scoring performance, Canada showed resilience in the fourth quarter to beat their opponent by twenty points, 91-71.
Shooting guard Kim Gaucher scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds for Canada and was joined by teammates Nirra Fields with 15 points and six rebounds and Katherine Plouffe with 13 points.
For the remaining quarter-final places, France face Brazil in Ankara, China take on Belarus in Istanbul, and Serbia play Cuba in the final game at 21:30 local time (19.30 GMT) in Istanbul.
