NBA team Los Angeles Lakers' point guard Steve Nash announced his retirement on his Twitter account on Saturday.
"I'm retiring from basketball. Thanks for all the love through the years," said the 41-year-old Canadian guard.
Ending his 19-year NBA career, Nash also declared his retirement with a letter on The Players' Tribune. "I will likely never play basketball again," he said, adding: "It's bittersweet. I already miss the game deeply, but I'm also really excited to learn to do something else."
Known for his playmaking, ball handling and shooting abilities, Steve Nash was one of the notable players in the NBA, having been selected for NBA All-Star for eight times and MVP (Most Valuable Player) twice.
Tussling with injury problems this season, Nash formerly played for Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks before his two-and-half-year spell at Western Conference side Los Angeles Lakers.
The former Canadian guard played with 14.3 point and 8.5 assist averages as well as 90.4 free throw percentage in regular season throughout his career.
