BRAZAVILLE, Republic of the Congo
A group of unidentified gunmen on Monday morning attacked a military base in Congo’s capital city of Brazzaville, eyewitnesses have told Anadolu Agency.
The assailants opened fire on the camp in the Mayanga neighborhood of southern Brazzaville, eyewitnesses said.
So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack and it is unclear if any deaths took place.
Local sources have suggested that it may be a rebel operation against the re-election of President Denis Sassou Nguesso on March 20.
The attack comes a week after the opposition rejected the results and called for a general strike across the country to denounce alleged “massive fraud” during the presidential elections.
Last October, Congo voted in favor of constitutional changes which would allow the president to run for another term.
The referendum saw more than 92 percent of voters agree with the reforms, election officials said.
Nguesso, 72, who has been in power for 32 years, won another five-year term last month.
