DAMASCUS
Twenty civilians were killed, including women and children, and another 50 were injured Wednesday when the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad carried out several airstrikes in the Eastern Ghouta area near Damascus, Syrian Civil Defense sources told Anadolu Agency.
The sources, who are based in the targeted areas, said Syrian warplanes had hit the towns of Zamalka and Misraba and the city of Douma.
Currently held by anti-Assad opposition groups, Eastern Ghouta is part of Syria’s Rif Dimashq province.
For the last three years, the area has been besieged by Syrian regime forces, depriving it of electricity and water.
According to UN figures, Syria’s civil war -- soon to enter its sixth year -- has seen at least 250,000 people killed and turned the country into the world's largest source of refugees.
