Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird has condemned the downing of a Turkish warplane by Syria last Friday.
"Canada condemns in the strongest terms the aggressive and unjustified attack against a clearly marked Turkish aircraft by the Syrian military. This deplorable incident, targeting a routine training mission, threatens to inflame already-heightened tensions," Baird said in remarks on Monday.
Baird said the Canadian government praised the Turkish government's "resolve and restraint in the face of such a provocative attack."
"As a NATO ally, we stand with the Turkish people and their government. We also reserve special thoughts for the missing Turkish pilots and their loved ones," Baird said.
Azerbaijan also condemned the attack on the Turkish reconnaissance plane as a spokesperson with Azeri Foreign Ministry said the incident must be investigated "thoroughly and urgently."
