ANKARA
Turkish schools were closed Thursday in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, as well as in several other cities, due to heavy snow nationwide.
Schools were also closed in the provinces of Duzce, Bakikesir, Cankiri, Bolu, Trabzon, Tokat, Elazig and Erzurum because of strong winds and snow.
Many roads in smaller towns across the country were shut down.
The eastern Saliurfa-Diyarbakir, Malatya-Kayseri and Siirt-Sirnak highways and the Ankara-Duzce highway were also closed to traffic due to the heavy snowfall.
Temperatures dropped below zero, especially in Istanbul, Izmir, Balikesir, Canakkale, Manisa and a number of other cities.
