Turkish Cypriot prime minister slammed Wednesday a non confidence vote for his government as "a clear disrespect to the popular will" ahead of early elections scheduled for July 28.
National Union Party (UBP) leader Irsen Kucuk, who will have to submit his resignation in three days, said the Turkish Cypriot president should assign the UBP again to form a new government "in the light of the democratic practices and the distribution of seats at the parliament."
"Even if a government secures a vote of confidence, it won't be possible to implement a government program in two months' time. Moreover, the current distribution of seats at the parliament makes it impossible for any government to secure a vote of confidence," he said.
Kucuk also ruled out any possibility that the opposition Republican Turkish Party (CTP) could be appointed with forming a new government, saying, "it will be a post-modern coup if the president appoints the task of forming a new government to other parties skipping the biggest party. We strongly oppose all coups. Turkish Cypriots has internalized democracy well enough not tolerate any post-modern coup."
Vote of no-confidence required the resignation of Prime Minister Kucuk, as the parliament accepted the censure motion by 27 votes out of 50, Turkish Cypriot Parliament Speaker Hasan Bozer said.
The UBP government, on duty since May 17, 2010, lost its majority as 8 parliamentarians resigned from the party on May 26.
