ROME (AA) - Turkish Minister of Agriculture, Food and Animal Breeding Mehmet Mehdi Eker addressed on Wednesday the conference of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of United Nations (UN) in Rome, saying, "Legume family will play an important role for healthy nourishment as well as against food security and environmental issues."
Eker also reminded that the year 2016 was made public as "International Legume Year" within the support of legume producer country, adding, "the small farmers in the developing countries do need legume production to maintain their lives".
Eker said that Turkey took the fourth place for the chickpea production and third place for the lentil production.
"The celebration of the year 2016 as 'International Legume Year' is unique opportunity to strengthen the connections by food chain partnership," said Eker.
