Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has said, in the scope of protecting the Syrian people and finding a peaceful resolution to the Syria crisis, the UN Security Council has a major responsibility.
Speaking at a meeting titled "Protection of civilians in armed conflicts", Ihsanoglu underlined that civilians pay the heavy cost in conflicts all the time.
Ihsanoglu stressed the responsibilities of the Council and suggested that the Council to assume its responsibility to do its utmost to protect the Syrian people.
"Unfortunately, neither the Council nor the international community passed the test of protecting civilians. Here, I remind Security Council to protect Syrians and bring peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict through political dialogue."
During his speech, Ihsanoglu also touched on the violations of the international law by Israel and highlighted that the Council is expected to ensure the accountability of each member state without exception however Israel continues to enjoy impunity despite its flagrant violations of international law as well as international humanitarian and human rights law.
Intensive UN talks of OIC SG Ihsanoglu
Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has said, "The increasing cooperating understanding between the United Nations (UN) and the OIC, brought the international solidarity and association to a further stage."
Ihsanoglu who has been holding intensive talks at the UN talked to AA after his meeting with the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Ban Ki-moon. He said, the meeting between him and UN SC Ban covered the ideas of what could be done in order to find solutions for the problems of people in Syria, Mali and Myanmar primarily.
"Two weeks ago, in the Kuwait meeting, we collected $1.5 billion for Syrian shelter seekers," reminded Ihsanoglu and stated, the strong cooperation between these two establishments formed that success.
"With the increasing cooperation understanding and the strategic partnership between UN and OIC, in the international solidarity and association, we got to a further stage," stressed Ihsanoglu.
Also, OIC SC Ihsanoglu touched to the issue of the protection of the civilians in armed conflicts and stated that it was such a sensitive topic said, "As OIC, we had a chance to explain our attitude and works in this field to the Security Council during our speeches and bilateral talks."
