Syrians sheltered in southern Turkey had the joy of having their first democracy experience.
Casting vote for the very first time in their lives, Syrians living in the container city in Kilis chose their community leaders and city board members on Thursday.
Kilis Governer Suleyman Tapsiz told the press members on Friday that 6 village chiefs for the 6 districts of the container city and 12 city board members were elected among 60 candidates. Announcing the results of the election, Tapsiz said the elected Syrians would form the city council and would serve in the security, healthcare, education, religion and infrastructure areas.
He said the Syrians, especially women voters highly participated the election, adding that was an indicator of Syrian women claiming their democratic rights.
Tapsiz wished the election, which was historic since it enabled Syrians to have their first democracy experience, would strengthen the friendship, cooperation and solidarity among Turkish and Syrian people.
