During his briefing to the UNSC session chaired by Azerbaijan's Permanent UN Representative Agsin Mehdiev, UN Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson gave information about his contacts in Somalia.
Stating the last time he visited the region was 1992, Eliasson said he witnessed the start of a new Somalia as well as the indications of hope and determination in the region.
The attacks on the UN's office in Mogadishu and a shopping centre in Kenyan capital Nairobi target the confidence of the peace process, Eliasson said in his speech.
"It is my responsibility to inform the Security Council that had it not been for our previous and current support, millions of Somalians would have died," said Eliasson, mentioning his awareness that asking for aid would be difficult in the current economic situation.
Eliasson praised Turkey's positive role in developments in Somalia, telling AA he witnessed Turkey's huge contribution to the new Somalia during the reception held after the session.
Eliasson was in Mogadishu on October 26, when he met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Speaker of the Federal Parliament Mohammad Sheikh Osman Jawari and Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon.
