ISTANBUL
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Yalcin Akdogan has visited Istanbul's Police Department a day after it was attacked by two armed terrorists, stressing the importance of both international and domestic "solidarity" to curb such incidents.
His comments came on Thursday after a security guard was wounded in an exchange of gunfire after a woman carrying bombs and a rifle attacked security guards at the Police Department in Vatan Street the evening before.
Akdogan said after his visit: "We need to oppose every kind of terror incident.
"Solidarity is important in the fight against terrorism. It is important both inside and outside of the country."
Potential bomber
Elif Sultan Kalsen, a member of the terrorist Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front group or DHKP-C was shot dead and her male accomplice arrested shortly after the attack, Turkish police said.
Kalsen had been sought by police after being listed as a potential suicide bomber.
The incident came a day after members of the DHKP-C terrorist group raided Istanbul's courthouse and killed Prosecutor Mehmet Selim Kiraz after taking him hostage for about eight hours.
The DHKP-C was founded in 1978, which purports to support Marxist-Leninist ideology, and was mostly active during the Cold War era but revived its attacks in recent years.
Targeting security officials, high-profile politicians and carrying out suicide bombings, the group is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
