WASHINGTON (AA) - August 29, 2012 - The United States focused on assisting Turkey in handling flow of Syrians into the country, U.S. spokesperson said at a daily press briefing on Wednesday.
Replying to a question on Turkey's offer on a buffer zone in Syria, U.S. State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said that the focal point of the U.S. was to help Turkey handle flow of Syrians and get more assistance from the United Nations. This would be the best way to ensure security in the short term, she said.
Asked whether or not she had any information if Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu thought of bringing up the matter (buffer zone) at the UN Security Council meeting, Nuland recalled that "operational mechanism" meeting was held in Ankara between Turkish and U.S. officials as well as U.S. officials held comprehensive consultations with Turkish government during U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton's visit to Turkey. Nuland said they were holding talks on the matter with Davutoglu, but they focused on helping Turkey deal with flow of Syrians.
