About 14 people are feared dead and 15 others injured after a bomb went off Friday near an ATM in Nigeria's northeastern town of Azare in Bauchi State, eyewitnesses have said.
"As many as 14 people have been confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Center. Nearly 15 others are injured. The blast occurred in front of an ATM in Azare town of Katagum local government in Bauchi State," Nurudeen Gbemisola, a witness, said via twitter.
"One of the people on the queue is believed to have detonated the explosive, but one cannot really tell if it was suicide bombing or not," he added.
Patience Ogbodo, a local journalist in Bauchi, told Anadolu Agency that the victims were "mainly government workers who queued up to collect money. They were just paid their salary, so everyone was trying to get money, especially for the weekend."
"At least 40 people were injured," she added.
Police had not commented on the incident as of the filing of this report.
Bauchi, although relatively peaceful compared to its northeastern neighbors, has not been totally immune from attacks, which are believed to be linked to the Boko Haram militant group.
