At least 29 male students were killed Monday night when suspected Boko Haram militants attacked a college in Nigeria's northeastern Yobe State.
"The attackers killed 29 students, all male, and burnt down 24 staff quarters, including the administrative block of the Federal Government College," Yobe State police commissioner Sanusi Rufai told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.
"Some of the victims were burnt beyond recognition," he added.
Captain Lazarus Eli, a spokesman for the Nigerian army's 3rd division of the special operations battalion, confirmed the attack.
"I am aware of the incident but I cannot say precisely how many casualties were recorded," he told AA.
"All I can tell you now is that our men have been deployed in the area," Lazarus added.
The Monday night attack was the first major since last August's attack on a college of agriculture in Gujba, Yobe State, where more than 40 students were murdered and several others injured by insurgents.
