KABUL, Afghanistan
At least 86 militants were killed Wednesday by Afghan security forces during armed operations against Taliban militants across the country, according to the Afghan Interior Ministry.
The ministry also confirmed that more than 15 Taliban militants were wounded and one other was taken into custody while 31 roadside bombs which were placed by the Taliban were defused in different regions.
The operations were carried out in provinces of Kunar, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Zabul, Logar and Herat.
Contrarily, the Taliban denied the Afghan government’s announcement and claimed the militant group’s fighters killed “scores” of security forces.
Violence has spiked in the country in recent months as the majority of foreign troops prepare to leave Afghanistan at the end of 2014.
