At least 13 people have been killed when gunmen opened fire on a bus and two trucks in Afghanistan early on Tuesday.
The gunmen targeted civilian vehicles in the Wardak province on a highway linking the capital Kabul and the southern province of Kandahar soon after midnight, according to Attaullah Khojyani, the spokesman for the provincial governor.
"At least 13 people including one woman were killed and two others were injured," Khojyani told Anadolu Agency. "The injured people were shifted to the provincial hospital and are reported to be in good condition."
"An investigation is underway to find out what was the motivation behind the incident," he said, adding that he believed Taliban militants were responsible.
The highway between Kabul and Afghanistan's southern provinces has recently been targeted by suspected militants who have killed and kidnapped travellers.
At least 31 Shia passengers were recently singled-out and kidnapped by suspected militants in the Zabul province while travelling to Kandahar.
Afghan officials blamed militants claiming loyalty to Daesh for the incident and have begun a rescue operation but have not been able to free the passengers, who belong to the ethnic Hazara minority.
