KABUL
The number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan has increased by 14 percent in the last year, according to a UN report.
According to the report, 2,959 civilians were killed in Afghanistan in 2013, and 5,656 people were injured in clashes between the government and insurgents.
UN Special Representative for Afghanistan, Jan Kubis said that the armed conflicts in 2013 have caused the deaths of civilians in a relentless way.
The biggest killer was explosives, trapped by the side of the roads. About 27 percent of all 2013 casualties have stemmed from fighting between the government and insurgents, and most of these could not be attributed to one side, the report said.
Meanwhile, the UN said that 235 women and 561 children died in 2013 in Afghanistan, adding that in the last three years, 14,000 people were killed in armed conflicts in the country.
