AI must serve human dignity, strengthen peace, says Pope Leo

Pope Leo XIV said Monday that artificial intelligence must serve human dignity and strengthen peace and should be guided by wisdom and charity.

In a message to the first edition of AI4Peace conference held in Rome, the pontiff said that in a world marked by conflict and division, the development of artificial intelligence "must be guided by wisdom and charity" so that technological progress may serve the dignity of every person.

Addressing discussions about artificial intelligence in a world experiencing conflict and division, he noted that technological development requires not only technical expertise but also a vision "inspired by wisdom and charity."

Vatican News reported that the pope also called on participants to examine ways in which artificial intelligence can contribute to peace when its development and use are guided by concern for the good of others.

He invited them in particular to explore how AI can "foster dialogue, reconciliation and solidarity among peoples," helping to transform the fruits of technological innovation into "instruments of peace."

A series of recent incidents in which AI went beyond what many thought possible, along with warnings from artificial intelligence insiders, has led to calls for the technology to be slowed down and more tightly regulated.
