Death toll from twin bomb attack in Lebanon rises to 50 - mayor

Issuing a written statement, Lebanon's outgoing Prime Minister Najib Mikati declared day of mourning between 08:00 and 21:00 local time for those who lost their lives during the simultaneous bombings outside Tripoli's Al-Taqwa and Al-Salam Mosques during Friday prayers.

Tripoli Mayor Nader Ghazal announced at a press conference that the death toll of the twin bombings had increased to 50 while there are over 350 wounded people.

During Friday prayers, two simultaneous bomb attacks rocked Tripoli's Al-Taqwa and Al-Salam Mosques in Al-Zahiriyya and the Al-Mina neighborhoods, areas mostly inhabited by the country's Sunnis.

Lebanese security sources announced that 70 kg of explosives were used in the attack on Al-Salam Mosque while the amount used for Al-Taqwa Mosque attack was 60 kg.

The attacks were reported to be mounted with bomb-laden vehicles both of which were detonated by remote control, security sources said.
