MOSCOW
The death toll has gone up to 16 after a suicide bomber blew herself up at the main railway station in Russia’s southern city of Volgograd on Sunday.
Russian Investigative Committee Representative Vladimir Markin said that the death toll went up to 16, and 42 people including two children were wounded in the attack. Markin added that those in critical condition were sent to Moscow via plane.
Volgograd Governor Sergey Bojenov said that January 1-3 were declared as "days of mourning" in the city, and the families of those who were killed would receive one million rubles each in compensation. Those wounded will receive 200 thousand rubles each, Bojenov added.
The terror threat level in the region has been raised to "amber" for a term of 15 days.
Volvograd was hit by a similar attack back in October when a female suicide bomber was accused of a bus explosion that killed six people. A car bomb killed at least three people in the southern Russian city of Pyatigorsk on Friday.
