STRELNA (AA) - European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said the international community "cannot remain idle" in the face of Syria's "apparent" chemical weapons use, calling upon the United Nations to publish the final report of the efforts and investigation that UN inspectors team carried out in Syria last week concerning the use of chemical weapons in the two-year-old civil war. Speaking ahead of the G-20 Summit meeting in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, he described the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime on August 21 in the Ghouta suburbs of the Syrian capital of Damascus as a "grave violation of human rights and international laws." Rompuy argued that there is no military solution to the Syrian conflict, saying "Only a political solution can end the terrible bloodshed, grave violations of human rights and the far-reaching destruction of Syria." "Too many lives have already been lost and too many people have suffered for too long and lost too much," he said. He added that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will brief the world leaders at the G-20 Summit on recent developments regarding Syria. englishnews@aa.com.tr
