Egyptian smugglers reportedly opened fire late Sunday at Israel from inside the Sinai Peninsula, the Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot reported.
The newspaper said the shooting left no causalities and that Israeli army troops had rushed to the scene to investigate the incident.
There was no official comment from the Israeli army on the incident until the filing of this report.
Earlier today, the Israeli army was put on the highest level of alert amid tensions on the borders with Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip.
Two mortar rounds were fired from Lebanon into the Kiryat Shmona Jewish settlement earlier in the morning, causing no damage or casualties.
The Israeli army shelled a southern Lebanese area in response.
Last week, a mortar shell fired from Syria landed in the Israeli occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
Israel launched a series of raids on Gaza last week, killing one Palestinian child and wounding six others.
The raids followed the killing of an Israeli worker on the border with Gaza.
