CAIRO (AA) - Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad has said he had shown a visiting EU envoy that the adamant protests against the coup in Egypt were peaceful.
During his official visit, EU Special Representative for the Southern Mediterranean Bernardino Leon met with Haddad and toured the Rabaa al-Adawiya Square in capital Cairo, where Morsi supporters continue to hold sit-ins despite the interim government's repeated calls to end them.
"We visited the square with Leon, and he was able to observe that contrary to allegations there are no guns here, and the demonstrations are completely peaceful."
"We explained to him that we stand against fait accomplis and military interventions, and that there is no alternative to democratic legitimacy for preserving freedom in Egypt."
Leon's visit follows on the heels of another by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who last week became the first foreign politician to meet Egypt's ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
Egypt's army-backed government issued on Wednesday another call on anti-coup protesters to put a stop to weeks-long sit-ins. This last warning is likely to be followed by decisive police action to end the demonstrations, feared to spark further clashes and violence.
