An elderly British Muslim was beaten to death in a northern English town as he made his way to early morning prayers last summer, according to local media reports of the trial of two men accused of his murder.
Mushin Ahmed, 81, was repeatedly punched and kicked in a racially-motivated attack in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Aug. 10 last year, The Yorkshire Post newspaper reported Wednesday.
He was left lying on the ground and died in hospital 11 days later.
Dale Jones and Damien Hunt, both 30, were said to have attacked the pensioner while in a “raging fury”, having spent the previous day drinking and taking drugs.
At the beginning of the trial on Tuesday, prosecutor Andrew Robertson said Jones accused Ahmed of “being a ‘groomer’... his word for pedophile, for no better reason than Mr. Ahmed was Asian.
“CCTV shows Mr. Ahmed walking towards a roundabout but then both defendants Jones and Hunt began to bother him and broke into a jog.”
He added: “From the medical evidence, Mr. Ahmed suffered many blows, many kicks and stamps to the head.”
Ahmed was discovered by a passer-by two hours later.
Jones and Hunt both deny murder, which carries a mandatory term of life imprisonment. The case continues.
