BRUSSELS
The EU is to expand its sanctions on Russia over the crisis in Ukraine, EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy has announced.
Van Rompuy said in a written statement on Monday that the new list of sanctions would be put into force after it is announced on the EU’s official gazette in a couple of days' time, leaving ''time for an assessment of the implementation of the cease-fire agreement and the peace plan".
''The sanctions aim at promoting a change of course in Russia's actions destabilizing eastern Ukraine and come in the wake of the European Council of 30 August, which condemned the increasing inflows of fighters and weapons from the territory of the Russian Federation into Eastern Ukraine and the aggression by Russian armed forces on Ukrainian soil,'' the statement said.
